Week 2

Join Our Campaign and Change a Person’s Life

We are pleased to announce the launch of our five-week annual appeal to raise funds to support our community programs.

Week 2: This week’s spotlight is on our outreach programs.

Since we launched in 2014, we have offered donor-supported writing workshops to many mission-based organizations who make a huge difference in the greater Red Bank community, including Lunch Break, Second Life Bikes, Family Based Services Association of NJ, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Sunnyside Manor, and Amanda’s Easel.

While we work with diverse populations of every age, each participant has a similar experience—discovering new things about themselves, feeling more connected to one another, and building confidence, resiliency, and hope.

One of our favorite places to give workshops is at Shore House, a clubhouse for adults living with mental illness in Long Branch. Writing and sharing their stories in our twice-monthly workshops has allowed the members of Shore House to reflect on their lives, gain confidence to face their challenges, and find a greater purpose in their endeavors outside the classroom.

In this week’s video from our 2017 annual event, you’ll see two Shore House members whose lives were transformed through our programs: the wonderful and courageous Sherone and Sam.

Sherone thrived in our workshops at Shore House as we helped reawaken her writer self. She then became a scholarship student in our studio classes, where she surprises herself with her insights and is humbled by the enthusiastic reception to her writing. She regularly performs at our “Voices & Verse” open mic at the Count Basie Theatre.

Sherone loved writing when she was younger but gradually fell away from it.

As she writes:

I kept notebooks full of short stories and essays hidden between my mattress and box spring, as I had in every place we’d lived since I was seven. While my stories always focused on the lives of my friends and their families, it was in the essays that one could find the words that I’d never had the courage to speak aloud. Only those notebooks knew all of my triumphs, tragedies, and truths.

We love that we have helped her remember what it means to be a writer (see her note to us below).

Sam rediscovered his voice through our Shore House workshops. He told us that writing with us has given him the confidence to perform on the big stage. This December, he will participate in Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity at Count Basie Theatre.

Here’s a quote from Sam’s poem that sums up how writing has impacted his life.

Writing mends the wounds
Binds the tears
Changes the rhythm of the tune
The song is free now

Without you, we couldn’t do this important work!

“Project Write Now has touched every member who has attended their workshops. By helping our members examine their writing, we were able to put together a GoFundMe page to raise money for our van driver, create testimonials that members can use when they speak at our events, and even create and publish a book, a goal the members have had for as long as I have been a part of Shore House. Jen, Allison, and Lisa make everyone feel comfortable in their workshops. We learn things about each other and become a closer group, sharing laughter and tears.” —Susan Mazzeo, Executive Director, Shore House
