The Judith M. Chauhan “Make a Difference” Fund
“Go write.” Those were the words Judith Chauhan would say to her daughter, Jennifer Chauhan, whenever Jennifer was struggling or needed to express herself. Jennifer took those words and her mother’s encouragement and pursued a career in journalism and education, eventually co-founding Project Write Now as a way to offer people of all ages and populations opportunities to write their stories, express themselves, and be heard. This fund is very dear to Jennifer’s heart as it is created in her mother’s memory. Judith passed away in 2007 after a short battle with metastatic lung cancer. Judith was a tremendous influence not only in Jennifer’s life but also in the lives of all who knew her–through her volunteer work at her children’s schools to her role as Director of Human Resources for a government nonprofit. A woman of action, she inspired family, friends, and colleagues with her mantra, “If you’re on this planet, make a difference.” Project Write Now is a tribute to Judith’s memory and the fund will support all of the free community programs Project Write Now offers.
The Mary P. Kernan College & Career Readiness Fund
This fund is named in memory of Mary P. Kernan, aunt of writing instructor Lisa McLaughlin, who passed away in 2015. Mary began her career as an English teacher and then started working for Lord & Taylor in New York City, eventually becoming Vice-President of Human Resources. Mary, a gifted writer with a gigantic heart, was a lifelong advocate for youth, artists, and those making positive change in their lives.
