There are moments in every educator’s journey where we need to step back, breathe, and remember …
“What called us to education?”
“Why did we choose this path?”
“Who do we teach?”
Coming off a seven-month sabbatical filled with questions about my purpose and the direction of my next steps, the Writing on the River retreat could not have come at a better time. This year’s theme, “Reignite the Spark Within You,” stirred up something inside me.
Perhaps the spark of hope, renewal, possibilities?
There’s something sacred about gathering with other educators from near and far, who are passionate, committed, and determined to show up for their students every single day. It’s a reminder that we’re not alone in this work. It’s a reminder that we, too, deserve the same love, care, and creativity we pour into others.
As we sat in community, inspired by the beauty of the Navesink River, we reflected and connected through journaling, poetry, and creating “memory boxes” as keepsakes to remember our “why” that first called us to education.
As someone who wears many hats as an educator, teacher, counselor, speaker, author, writer, and mom, this space gave me permission to simply be me. To remember that before I can pour into others, I must first tend to lighting the fire within me. If my light goes out or gets dim, it is important I reignite my spark again so my light can continue to shine bright.
Thank you, Project Write Now, for another amazing retreat and opportunity to fill our cups through writing, sharing, and simply being together.
To every educator …
Keep showing up.
Keep building community.
Keep pouring into one another, because when we do, we don’t just grow individually, we grow together.
