Our Teacher Writing Collaborative gives teachers a safe space to talk about their experiences and seek advice, feedback, and support. We also exchange lesson plans and share what is inspiring us as writers and educators.
Here’s what we are reading, watching, listening to, and eating …
February 2021:
What we’re reading …
Mona Soliman is reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman. “It is about a young man returning to his childhood home and telling the fantastical tale of his youth. It is stoked in mysticism and makes you rethink your own childhood experiences. I am also considering how to incorporate equity into my unit on The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. I’m thinking of including The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros. Both are written in snapshots and include strong young women and the adversity they face. Both are written with an honest and candid eye, but also lovingly and full of forgiveness.”
Listening to …
Christine Demarsico has been listening to Brené Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability: Teachings on Authenticity, Connection, and Courage on Audible. “Brown invites us to be ourselves as we stand up and shine our light to the world. I love her voice as her stories model our collective fears of showing up to live our own authentic lives. The audiobook is filled with inspiration. I can absolutely relate with the struggle to rise up and use our vulnerability to be stronger.”
Watching …
Danielle Boska is watching For Life on ABC. Based on a true story, the show is about a man named Aaron Wallace who was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. While he was in jail, he earned his law degree to help free himself and others. It shows a lot of what our world is going through and someone who has lived on both sides. I look forward to watching it every week.”
Eating …
Susan Kuper is eating Qua pizza in Manasquan. “My favorite is the white Roman pizza with extra mozzarella, broccoli rabe, Gaeta olives, and ricotta on the side. The ingredients are always fresh and the pizza delicious. This BYOB pizza place is perfect for take-out or to eat in while enjoying a lovely bottle of red wine.”
Miscellaneous …
