with instructor and Sub & Pub leader Courtney Harler
We are also hosting a Sub & Pub Open House on Monday, September 27. While we’ve answered some questions here, please join us for our Open House to learn more about how our Sub & Pub program can support you on your writing journey.
What are subs and pubs?
We’re talking (mostly) literary magazines. Subs are submissions. Pubs are publications. Writers can also submit to anthologies, newspapers, glossy magazines, trade venues, websites, etc. If you can write it, you can submit it.
Why would I want to join?
Primarily, because you want to. Because you are ready to get your work out there in the world.
Why can’t I “just do it” on my own?
Well, you can. But, as with most creative endeavors, a community of like-minded writers helps.
Helps with what, exactly?
Honestly, rejection. Lit mags have low acceptance rates. But, if you never try, you’ll never know.
But seriously, do I need class/club on this topic? Can’t I just be rejected/succeed privately?
Of course you can. But here at PWN, you have the unique opportunity to collaborate with your fellow writers and to learn from our collective experience. You will also be led by a class/club facilitator who has lots of experience with subs and pubs, and especially, rejection. (So. Much. Rejection. Halp.) Let me, your fearless leader, and the other participants help you avoid the pitfalls that can actually guarantee failure. No one can guarantee success, but you can learn the industry tricks that may dramatically increase your odds of publication.
What will we do in the class?
Over three class sessions, we will explore the entire sub and pub process, including how to deal with both acceptance and rejection. You’ll leave the class with a plan for how to move forward.
What will we do in the club?
In the monthly club, we’ll both celebrate and commiserate. We’ll support one another and track our individual and collective progress. Members can choose to share snippets of their work and we’ll also do mini craft talks, if time permits.
Can I attend both the class and club?
Absolutely, and we hope you will. The class and club are designed to work together for the added benefit of all participants. You can attend one or the other, or both, for a low price.
Okay, I get it now. But what’s this other rando “open house” event?
Essentially, the Sub & Pub Open House will launch both the class and club for the fall season. The Open House is FREE and open to all those interested. Please join us to learn more and ask questions. And you are welcome to bring a friend!
