with instructor and Sub & Pub leader Courtney Harler
PWN is excited to again run a Sub & Pub class. In this three-week collaborative class, you’ll learn how to pinpoint your ideal markets, craft cover letters and author bios, and the rewards of rejections! Still have questions? See our Q&A with the class instructor Courtney Harler below:
What are subs and pubs?
We’re talking (mostly) literary magazines. Subs are submissions. Pubs are publications. Writers can also submit to anthologies, newspapers, glossy magazines, trade venues, websites, etc. If you can write it, you can submit it.
Why would I want to join?
Primarily, because you want to. Because you are ready to get your work out there in the world.
Why can’t I “just do it” on my own?
Well, you can. But, as with most creative endeavors, a community of like-minded writers helps.
Helps with what, exactly?
Honestly, rejection. Lit mags have low acceptance rates. But, if you never try, you’ll never know.
But seriously, do I need class on this topic? Can’t I just be rejected/succeed privately?
Of course you can. But here at PWN, you have the unique opportunity to collaborate with your fellow writers and to learn from our collective experience. You will also be led by a class facilitator who has lots of experience with subs and pubs, and especially, rejection. (So. Much. Rejection. Halp.) Let me, your fearless leader, and the other participants help you avoid the pitfalls that can actually guarantee failure. No one can guarantee success, but you can learn the industry tricks that may dramatically increase your odds of publication.
What will we do in the class?
Over three class sessions, we will explore the entire sub and pub process, including how to deal with both acceptance and rejection. You’ll leave the class with a plan for how to move forward.
Anything else to know about the class?
Publishing your written work requires research and resilience. It’s less about luck and more about proper planning and due diligence. In this class, you can learn how to approach the publishing process with confidence.
