Having Your Say: Op-Ed & Expository Writing
Weave facts with personal insights.
Do you have opinions you want to share with a wider audience? These days writers who can help make sense of our rapidly changing world are more important than ever. During this class, we equip you with the power to weave facts with personal insights. We explore how to take a nugget of a concept and build it out into a full-fledged narrative. We also incorporate such techniques as opening with a strong lead to grab the reader’s attention, creating an A story and a B story to add complexity, and enhancing persuasive ideas that deepen your work. Join us as we craft Op-Ed pieces, letters to the editor, blog posts, and more. Students who have taken this class have been published in The Washington Post and the NY Daily News. Bring your ideas, an open mind, and a spirit of adventure.
“Throughout the course, Having Your Say: Op-Ed Expository Writing, Pamela Johnson was very generous with her time as she helped students like me excavate polished work from our brainstorms and drafts. The class was both theory and practice, an approach that was sorely missing from my MFA program.”
Meet Your Instructor: Pamela K. Johnson
“The reason I’ve had Op-Eds in the NY Times and LA Times—and my students have been published in the NY Daily News and Washington Post—is because placing an Op-Ed is not that hard. Fifty percent of it is having a compelling idea, putting it into 800 words, and submitting it. The other half is what I can teach you: The techniques that help you turn your concepts into compelling essays with the potential to catch an editor’s eye, make them pause and say, ‘I want this!'”
