Description
Listen, Observe, Gather
Practice skills of observation and description.
Are you looking for ways to elevate your writing so it will resonate even more with your readers? During this class, we practice skills of observation and description as well as important ways of drawing out stories through the ABC habit—Always Be Collecting. We learn how to seamlessly weave in pithy anecdotes, detail-rich descriptions, unique and heartfelt quotes, and snappy dialogue. Whether you’re a poet, essayist, blogger, or journaler (or all of the above and more!), this class deepens and brightens your writing. (Includes light homework.)
Meet Your Instructor: Gay Norton Edelman
“As a budding young feature writer, I learned that everything I see, hear, feel or experience is a possible idea. Listening to and watching other humans fills my reserve of pithy anecdotes and great dialog. What’s more, carefully observing what people say and do—and pondering their motives—lights up the unique things I need to say, and what my readers want to hear. This is true for all the kinds of writing I do now, including poetry. I’m excited to work with students as they discover their best ways of feeding their imagination bank.”

Our organization was founded to help amplify the voices of those who are often not heard—including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+ individuals, and other historically marginalized groups. We have witnessed how writing and sharing stories has the power to effect change by generating greater love, compassion, and empathy in the listener. In all of our programs, we provide an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environment. We do not tolerate writing that perpetuates harmful stereotypes or fuels hate. Failure to align with our philosophy can result in your removal from class.
